you?
\r\n
Public health to me is primary prevention as its the science and practice of improving the health of all communities through education, promotion of healthy lifestyles, research for disease and injury prevention, and the detection and control of infectious diseases. This field focuses on populations rather than at an individual level, which makes the field not only unique, but also significant.
\r\n
Why did you choose to study public health at WVU?
\r\n
I never really discovered public health; the profession found me. During my experience as an emergency department scribe, I quickly realized the clinical setting was not for me. Although I have always wanted to care for individuals and assist in improving my community, I discovered there are other ways of improving the quality and delivery of patient care, through health administration. Moreover, enhancing public health initiatives truly interests me as it connects everything and everyone throughout various fields.
\r\n
Have you had any particular professors or faculty members who have made an impact on you while at WVU? He has provided me with insights, assisted in my administrative fellowship journey, and has always been there to support me. Indeed, Dr. Carlton has truly become an invaluable mentor for me and will continue to be in my future career.

To know, be a student and a graduate assistant of Dr. Steve Davis has been some of my favorite moments while being in the School of Public Health. Dr. Davis is a professor and mentor who will do anything for his students and wants them to succeed in their endeavors. I’m grateful for his mentorship, support and dedication to my success that he has provided me.

Last but not least, Dr. France Weaver has had a lasting impact on me throughout my time in the Master of Health Administration program. Dr. Weaver is not only an amazing professor but also a mentor who has provided essential support in navigating a graduate degree and next steps after graduation. Additionally, she has broadened my lens in terms of becoming a transformational and servant leader. As I reported to the vice president of operations and chief executive officer, I was able to be involved in numerous projects such as facilitating with the development of opening a wound care clinic and launching a human resource program, offering employees professional development and growth opportunities within the organization.
\r\n
What would you tell prospective students about WVU and the School of Public Health?
\r\n
WVU is a large university; however, as a student in the School of Public Health you quickly feel a sense of belonging within a tight-knit community. The faculty and staff provide an intimate educational setting and support to their students as we tackle critical public health issues that many are facing, especially in West Virginia and throughout the Appalachian region. Smaller class sizes and experienced faculty mentors prepare students for a variety of careers in the public health field.
\r\n
What advice would you give to your freshman self?
\r\n
Seek every opportunity and experience possible! Becoming well-educated and knowledgeable in your interests and potential career will have long-term benefits. Get involved in student organizations, reach out to professors and faculty, and make connections with those who can help you reach your future goals.
\r\n
How have your experiences in the School of Public Health helped prepare you for your future?
\r\n
The relationships built with faculty and staff in the School of Public Health have allowed me to build a better understanding for why public health is omnipresent in today’s world. Through their insights and course concepts, I feel that my experiences and knowledge thus far will prepare me to lead healthcare systems of the future.
\r\n
What do you plan to do upon completion of your degree?
\r\n
Upon completion of my degree, I have accepted the WVU Medicine administrative fellowship position, allowing me to learn from various leaders during core rotations, assigned projects and line management experience. Master of Health Administration
School of Public Health

This degree has challenged me in many different ways. It's taught me to look at health from a bigger perspective than just one person.

What does public health mean to you?

When I think of public health, I think of helping others. I wanted to help people in medicine, but I saw that it wasn't for me. Being a student in public health, you are still on the frontlines helping people – just in a different way.

Why did you choose to study public health?

I chose the field of public health at WVU after many attempts to find where I would belong in different majors my freshman year. I was introduced to the School of Public Health by the Career Services Department at the end of my freshman year and was able to take a tour of the school over the summer. That following fall semester, I was fully enrolled, and I knew immediately this was the field I wanted to be in for my future career. It all just clicked and I knew the material I was learning was a perfect fit for me.

Have any members of the faculty or staff influenced you in a unique way?

Dr. Weaver has shown her support throughout all of the endeavors I have pursued throughout my master's degree journey. I will forever be grateful for her guidance and mentorship.

What would you tell prospective students about WVU and the School of Public Health?

This degree has challenged me in many different ways. It's taught me to look at health from a bigger perspective than just one person. The school is so organized and ready to help you in any way, all you have to do is ask. They have truly set me up for my future endeavors.

How have your experiences in the School of Public Health helped prepare you for your future?

The professors and courses within the School of Public Health have helped me gain as much knowledge about the field before being sent out into the work field. Having the added advantage of being able to have a hands-on internship and capstone project before we graduate helps us get a firsthand look at the different career paths we can take after graduating.

Tell us about your capstone and field placement experience.

My internship and capstone were both done through Mon Health System, which is under Vandalia Health. I have been under HR for the past year as their intern, taking on numerous projects and roles. For my capstone, I helped work to integrate a new health system in our organization. I will be able to take these experiences and apply them to my future career!

What advice would you give to your freshman self?

Don't worry--in the end you'll find the career where you best fit.

What do you plan to do upon completion of your degree?

I will be Mon Health's first administrative fellow starting July 1, 2024!

Any additional involvement in activities or comments about the program?

I was heavily involved in getting the Health Administration Student Association up and running during my time as a graduate student. I served as the president for my second year in the Master of Health Administration program. This is a very small program where you can gain hands-on experience and learn from real-world examples.
