Try This Tuesday: Mindful Walking

Have you ever walked around campus and realized you spent your entire walk thinking about something random or stressful? Have you ever walked from point A to point B in a daze? Have you ever rushed somewhere only leading you to feel more uptight upon arrival? If you’ve answered yes to any of these, then we’ve got something special in store for you and it is called Mindful Walking.

Mindful Walking is a simple practice that can improve your quality of life and clear your mind of clutter. The goal is to shift your focus on what is around you and less on the destination or the stressful thoughts consuming your mind. To get started, you want to begin walking. As you are walking, pay attention to your surroundings and the sensations of your body. What do you see? What do you smell? How does the sun feel on your skin? Mindful Walking is about opening up your senses.

Why do this, you might ask? Walking in general has many health benefits and is listed by WHO as a recommended daily activity. It has also been studied to improve psychological wellbeing by improving stress, depression and anxiety.
